Sport Compact Nights Vancouver 2005

[May 14th 2005]

The beautiful coastal city of Vancouver is arguably Canada's sport compact capital, full of great rides. This is why we take every chance we get to attend sport compact events as they're always a sight, as the clean, professional-level cars reek of street cred and presence.

Vancouver marked the SCN Tour's first official stop on its national tour, and it debuted with a bang, attracting a claimed 13,000 spectators and over 300 competitor vehicles. It brought out the finest ladies, including Miss Hot Import Nights 2005, Ursula Mayes, who also happens to be last year's Maxim Hometown Hotties finalist. This was her first professional appearance in Canada , and it was a great first impression, as she certainly quickened pulses and got plenty of attention. She wasn't alone, as the lovely Mia Guzman helped out in that regard, as did last issue's PAS cover babe Crystal Lo. Meanwhile, BFGoodrich had its sweetheart for the year, Stephanie Ly, in its booth, catching plenty of adoring stares.

The event featured a particularly healthy helping of Euros, equaled only by the might of JDM-themed rides we've come to expect from Vancouver . The unofficial gem of the show was no doubt Samson Chan's JGTC-inspired and appropriately wide-body Acura NSX, also seen for the first time.

The vendors stepped up to make the event a great one, and the presentation was top-notch and very professional. XTScene brought feature model Jeri Lee to its booth to fulfill many young men's fantasies, while Pitstop's answer was to host non-stop giveaways and a contest that involved 12 beauties from the neighbouring city of Seattle .

The RocaWear stage show was not to be outdone and featured a slew of attractions and performances that included local hip hop artists, a break-dancing competition that defied gravity, and most interesting of all, a unique bikini contest where the girls were dressed up in a sexy theme, and included an army brat, a cowgirl, a student (or teacher?) and more. To top it off, the competition was hosted by Crystal Lo.

This well-rounded event proved to be a great combination of lifestyle attractions and great rides, some of the best of which rolled in representing a crew from the West Coast. Some of the amazing entries included a row of pristine S2000s, a magnificent seven whips from Seattle's Team Menace, Mospeed / Project One brought out 14 cars and Northwest Evos had a full 10 Mitsubishis come up from all over Washington . A&J Racing brought out 20 rides for a JDM section, and locals from Vancouver Civics, Club Integra, Garage 5, Keep Labs, Top E Kar Studio, and not-so-local Speedtech from Calgary all vied for the crowd's attention. Menace bagged the Team Results and Team Representation trophies, while Mospeed / Project One took Team Participation.

The VIP section, presented by RocaWear, saw Europrojektz represented well with 11 of its finest, including this issue's cover car beauty, Ivan Chen's wide-bodied, 450hp M3.

To let the drooling fans customize their own rides, local vendors were out in full force, and some of the more notable included Vancouver Motorsports, Signature Mazda, Heavy Metal (which unveiled an insane 300C), Audioline, Ducati (ok, so they were offering a new, different set of wheels), American Racing and Deutschtech, among others.

Individually, Best of Show honours went to John Achten for his wild Eclipse, while the first runner up was Christian Coujin's VeilSide-kitted Supra and Joe Galante's Supra was deemed to be the third best ride there. Galante also unveiled another sweet ride, his R34-body Nissan Skyline GT-R.

Not to say that the previous two years of SCN Vancouver were weak, but the third time was definitely the charm and we have no reservations in saying this year's show was by far the best. We can't wait to see what future editions of the event hold, and neither should you. The SCN crew moves East to Calgary on June 11, and we look forward to attending and bringing you all the juicy bits.
