It was just six months ago that a rising
show from the east attempted to penetrate the
western Canadian tuner market by hosting an
unassuming
event last September in Vancouver.
While smaller than other local events and squeezed
into a tight schedule of new shows, the first
SCN Vancouver managed to deliver an experience
never felt before. Six months later, the same
show would turn up the heat again but this time
at BCs largest venue, both doubling its
size and tripling its competitor car count.
With feature
cars in abundance, lets take a tour of
what SCN Vancouver 2004 was all about.
Walking into the show, one is immediately consumed
by the sheer
grandeurness of the venue itself. While being
bombarded with bass, lights, models and booths,
one must first make a stop at the Phoenix Gold
display and enter a ballot to win their decked
out Protege 5. This Mazda stuffed with a custom
Phoenix Gold sound system and a slew of performance
goodies was accompanied by the lovely ladies
of Lite
Glow and Phoenix Gold respectively. Speaking
of audio, all the major
labels were on hand as well representing their
product lines and
showing off their new 2004 demo vehicles. The
Alpine Civic SiR was
certainly one of the major feature cars. Complete
with a wild airbrush scheme, center drive transmission
and more custom work than most shops do in a
year, the Civics first appearance on Canadian
soil was explosive to say the least. Rockford
Fosgate also stepped up to the plate by importing
their brand new Hummer H2 project all the way
up
from California. Watching spectators step in
and getting their bones rattled by the intense
SPL levels that this truck produced was simply
incredible. Other audio manufacturers present
included Pioneer Electronics, Kenwood, Polk
Momo, Panasonic and Cerwin Vega showing off
their brand new line of audio equipment.
If there is anything that makes Vancouver unique
in the landscape of the Canadian tuner scene,
it has got to be the numerous amount of modified
high end vehicles. BFGoodrich, the title sponsor
of the event, came out hardcore with an elite
group of show cars in their collosal booth.
The white NSX from SR Autogroup with 02
front end conversion was certainly a show stopper.
Garage 5s wild Nissan Silvia S13 parked
next to the white Spoon equipped S2K from A&J
Racing only upped the ante. Finally, a yellow
Mazda RX7 that graced a previous cover of PASMAG
put the cherry on top to complete the presentation.
Castrol motor oil, the presenting sponsor of
the event, brought out a full race prepped all-motor
Integra drag car and a prestine metallic blue
Prelude complete with vertical doors, both courtesy
of Garage 5.
The top clubs and shops in the Vancouver area
also pulled out the stops for the event. SR
Auto group represented with the cleanest crew
of Bimmers, Benzs and 350Zs ever.
Bavaria Car Studio was also in full force with
a fleet of JDM jewels such as an authentic Diamond
Star EVOVIII, modded Subaru STi and turbocharged
Miata to mention a few. On the topic of JDM,
A&J Racing rounded up their team of full
Spoon-spec machines including a TSX, DC2 Integra,
EP3 Civic and DC5 RSX.

Other than shops,
local clubs from both Vancouver and Seattle
made the trip
to represent. ClubIntegra.net brought over
24 of their best members rides. They
would go on to to win Best Team
honours of the show. The Vancouver Civic
and Prelude clubs didnt skip out on
the occasion
either both in full attendance. Also repping
the 604 were clubs such as Euro Projektz,
RevScene, Imvasian, Velocity, AR Motorwork,
PG Performance and Keep Labs with a simply
sick 99 converted turbo RX7 . Teams
such as Mospeed,Outlandish, Intrinsic and
Elite all made the trip up from Seattle,
Washington. Even the Do-Luck USA crew were
present with a handful of tasty Scoobys.
However, respect has to go out to
the Best of Show winner Christian
Coujin from Seattle, with his mind-blowing
custom widebody Veilside turbo Supra complete
with deep dish HRE chrome 20s and
motorized I.C.E.
The Rocawear Stage Show was no laughing
matter either. Generally speaking, the
main stage at car shows normally consist
of nothing more than a raised platform
and a banner as a backdrop. The stage
at SCN Vancouver was of another nature.
Complete with full trussing and a premiere
lighting system, the Rocawear stage pumped
out act after act of urban entertainment.
One had to have noticed the two giant
screens located on either side of the
stage with one side projecting the sponsor's
logos and the other with a live video
feed of the crowd. With the Hooters bikini
contest as a main attraction and tons
of giveaways throughout the day, spectators
were treated to a healthy mix of entertainment
all day long. The much anticipated debut
of Canadas newest import model,
Christine Isabel, was also a crowd pleaser.
Accompanied by other model talent such
as Crystal Lo and Jamie Koeppe, spectators
loaded up their
memory cards faster than they could say
cheese.
With the huge success of this event, there
is no doubt that Sport Compact Nights
Vancouver will have a great impact on
the future of the Vancouver tuner scene.
Being both the first in the season with
such a great turnout sets precedence for
its return
to Vancity in 2005. By the end of the
evening, many new friendships were made
and many new rivalries born. One can only
imagine where this show can grow from
here on in. Watch out Canada, The 2004
Sport Compact Nights Tour is now officially
underway and headed for a city near you!
