World of Wheels 2005

Story by : Allan Chan  Photos: Allan Chan

[March 24-26 2005]

The yearly ritual known as the World of Wheels took place this year from Thursday March 24 th , 2005 to Saturday March 26 th , 2005 at the Winnipeg Convention Center . World of Wheels is considered the opening of the car show season in Winnipeg and incorporates all things on wheels. The show is a family event with something for everyone and this year's expansion into the second floor of the venue gave World of Wheels more than 100,000 square feet with about 200 cars and 90 motorcycles.

The third floor housed the majority of the cars with 130 of the show cars entered into the competition. Features included Street Rodder Magazine's 50 years of Chevy small block heritage, Super Chevy Magazine's Street Heat, Import Tuner's X-Treme Street Exhibit, and the Car Club Challenge presented by Trader Publications. Winnipeg tuners were on hand at the show to represent the Winnipeg sport compact scene. Tuners included: Toysport, Speedfactor, 50 Below Conceptz, Motion Performance, C.C. Customs, Foy, Wpg. Cruise Mag, Winnipeg Free Press Tuner Car giveaway, FASST from Frontier Subaru and Vickar Mitsubishi.

The second floor gave billing to the Extreme Motorcycle show presented by Harley Davidson Winnipeg. This second floor also included the Miss World of Wheels competition on Friday night. World of Wheels has a long standing tradition of bringing in different personalities to give a bit of something to everyone and this year was no exception with guest appearance by:

Showstoppers at this year's World of Wheels show in the sport compact sense was the "Bug-E-Bug" from Detroit which had a screen where the steering wheel was and used tiny joysticks on the inside of the doors to control the car while driving. This 1998 VW bug is diesel powered, houses 2 fish tanks in the headlights and a starting system that only starts after a positive fingerprint scan. The Winnipeg Free Press also displayed their 2005 Toyota Corolla tuner giveaway car which is the first supercharged corolla in Canada .

The show season in Winnipeg has begun. Let's bring it on.
